Visiting professorship program

The visiting professorship program is a partnership with the Departments of Medicine, Neurology, and Psychiatry at the Addis Ababa University school of Medicine in Ethiopia's capital city. The visiting professorship program is for one or two weeks.

The philosophy of all our programs is that "one doctor who cares can make a difference." The unique aspect of our programs is the focus on doctors. By helping improve the educational, financial, and physical situations of doctors in Ethiopia, we believe there will be an exponential effect on healthcare in Ethiopia.

Program in Neurology and Medicine

There is currently a neurology residency program at the Addis Ababa University. The university has state-of-the-art CT scanning, EMG, EEG, and evoked potential equipment. Activities of the staff include both inpatient and outpatient care. Among the possibilities for the one-week visiting professor would be:

1. Lectures to the staff, residents, and medical students.

2. Teaching rounds

3. Teaching and opportunities to train staff and technicians in CT Scanning, EMG, EEG, and EP.

4. Opportunities to explore expanding neurological services in areas of neurological specialization, such as, but not limited to: movement disorders, infectious disease, pediatrics, neuro-ophthalmology, rehabilitation and occupational medicine, and headache.

5. There is a need for visiting professor in all fields of medicine. As a neurologist, my focus is in that discipline, however since our desire is to help doctors, all medical generalists or specialists are welcome to apply.

The program's liason is Dr. Guta Zenebe, Chairman of the Departments of Medicine and Neurology.

Program in Psychiatry

We are actively working in a joint effort with the Department of Psychiatry to create the first psychiatric residency program in Ethiopia. Right now there are medical doctors in Ethiopia willing to enter a psychiatric residency program, though the program has not formally started. Among the possibilities for the one-week visiting professor would be:

1. Lectures to the staff, residents, and medical students.

2. Teaching rounds

3. Liason meetings with Ethiopian psychiatrists to help develop psychiatry in Ethiopia.

4. Travel opportunities to teach and lecture in more rural areas to aid the over 150 psychiatric nurses, already providing limited care throughout Ethiopia.

The program's liason is staff Psychiatrist and Professor Dr. Atalay Alem.

Program for residents and medical students

Residents and medical student generally come to Ethiopia for four to six week rotations. Residents, depending upon their speciality and training, and medical students are placed at Ethiopia's largest teaching hospital, the Black Lion Hospital, in Addis Ababa. Opportunities for a more rural healthcare experience can sometimes be accomodated.

We require a letter of recommendation from your program director or dean of students. We also require certification that you are in good physical and mental health. Vaccinations and Health Issues

There are a series of vaccinations that are necessary for travel to Ethiopia, including a yellow fever certificate needed prior to being issued a visa. We'll supply all visiting professors with the necessary information.

For those staying in Addis alone, there's not much risk of serious illness, especially for those staying at the Sheraton. However, we recommend that everyone bring a supply of antibiotics, and medications for fever, diarrhea, cramps, and nausea.

Donations and Scholarships

Donations to the visiting professor program are fully tax deductable. If you are able to support this program, please make the check payable to the Winer Foundation, a 501 C-3 public charity. Our tax id # is available upon request for corporate donors.

We do not believe that finances should be a reason why anyone shouldn't go to Ethiopia that wants to. The cost for the week is in the range of $2000-3500.00, depending on the accomodations, air carrier, and food. If finances are a problem, let us know and we'll make every effort to help.

An 8-minute videotape is available upon request. For further information, contact:
